Questions

The short answers to what people ask first. If yours isn't here, the API reference probably has it.

The free tools

Are my files uploaded?

No. Each tool runs in this browser tab on the same PDF code as the API, so your file is read and changed on your device. A tool fetches its own code the first time you use it, and a font when text needs one; those requests name the font, never your text. Your file is never part of a request, as your browser's network panel will show.

Do I need an account?

No. Open a tool and drop a file. An account is only for the API, and for saving a template from the field editor. You sign in with your email, and a free account needs no card.

Is it really free? What are the limits?

Yes. There's no daily limit, no watermark and no ads, and the only size limit is your device's memory. The tools are how people find the API, which is what we charge for.

Do you add a watermark?

No, never. The only watermark is one you add with Watermark PDF.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Protect PDF and Unlock PDF run in this tab, so the password never leaves it. Keep it safe: nobody, us included, can recover a lost one, and Unlock doesn't guess passwords.

How do I know the result is right?

Before a download is offered, pdf.js, a second PDF reader that shares no code with the one that wrote the file, opens the result and compares it with yours: every page, its size and its text, and whatever the tool added. A result that fails a check isn't offered.

Is Sign a PDF a digital signature?

Sign a PDF puts a picture of your signature on the page, the way you'd sign a printout. It isn't a certificate-based digital signature.

Can it read scanned PDFs?

Not yet. PDF to text points out pages with no text layer, which is what a scan usually is, instead of handing them back blank.

Can it convert Word files or compress a PDF?

It compresses: Compress PDF redraws photos at the size they're shown and saves them as JPEG, in this tab, and POST /v1/compress does the same from your code. Word conversion isn't here yet, because it needs programs that don't run in a browser. Merging, splitting, page edits, stamps, forms, passwords, text, and images to and from PDF are here today.

The field editor

What does the field editor keep?

The last few PDFs you open in it, with their boxes and test values, in this browser's own storage, so it reopens them where you left off. A locked PDF's password isn't kept, and Forget, beside each one, removes it. Fill any PDF and Sign a PDF keep nothing once you close the tab.

How do I fill a template from my code?

In the field editor's Template & API tab, Save to my account sends the PDF and its boxes to your account as a template. You sign in at dash.pdfedge.com with your email, and the save finishes there. Then POST /v1/fill with the template id and your data, one document per fill. The tab also shows the curl for each step.

The API

What counts as a document?

One operation on up to 50 pages, counted on the larger of what goes in and what comes out. Each further 50 pages, or part of them, adds one. Uploads, file reads and templates cost nothing.

What does it cost?

A free key covers 150 documents a month, with no card. When they're used up, calls stop until the month resets; nothing is watermarked. Plans: Starter is $9 a month for 2,000 documents, Growth $29 for 10,000 and Scale $79 for 40,000.

How long do you keep API files?

24 hours, then they're deleted, unless you ask for 7 or 30 days (or 365 on a paid plan). DELETE /v1/files/{id} removes one sooner. Values you fill in and text we extract aren't logged. Templates stay until you delete them.

Can an AI agent use it?

Yes. The MCP server at mcp.pdfedge.com offers the same operations as tools; send your key as a bearer token. Files go to the tools as URLs or ids, not as base64 in the chat. The setup is one block of JSON.

Is the API the same as the tools?

Yes. The tools run the API's own PDF code in your browser, so a tool's result is what the API returns. Run a tool once, and the exact API call appears under the result. PDF to JPG is the exception for now: its API operation is still to come.
